The name ‘JJ-W Hotel’ stands for the JIA JIA Hotel near the West Market in Tainan and its website, JIA JIA HOTEL @ West Market.

Built in Meiji 38 (1905 A.D.) in the Japanese colonial era, the West Market, as an important authorized market located in the old Hsimending in Tainan, was once prosperous. It held a key position in the Five-Harbor District, which was the economic hub of Tainan City from the late Kanghsi to the mid-Tongzhi Era. Looking back, one finds that the West Market actually contributed to Tainan’s 170 golden years, a time when thousands and thousands of merchandisers crowded here. Over time, anecdotes, fun jokes, and stories of chivalry have been rendered, with the scent of traditional tea, into the West Market’s rich, lively history, permeating this area with a leisurely tone and a special aura belonging to the local gentry who lived in privacy. 

「佳佳西市場文化旅店」是一個成長著、生活著的旅店，源起於一份對台南、台灣歷史的珍視。 我們喜歡自稱「佳佳西市場」，也喜歡自稱「佳佳」，讓「佳佳」既是「佳佳西市場文化旅店」，也是老「佳佳大飯店」。
老「佳佳大飯店」建築於1970年代，為臺灣首位女性開業建築師王秀蓮所設計，可謂是台灣邁向開放社會、接納多元價值的一個象徵。可惜的是，這個極具意義的象徵在激烈市場競爭中逐漸黯然。
而我們正是老「佳佳大飯店」的新生命，每一次自稱「佳佳」，都感受著歷史上相連的那分密切。
我們期望發掘在時間長流的積澱中，被埋藏的老佳佳、老台南、老台灣故事，用當代的語彙重述，再生出新舊交織、色彩生鮮的記憶。
1979年，在鄧麗君悠揚婉約的歌聲中，更生青年文雄（鍾鎮濤）與標緻啞女阿秀（林鳳嬌）譜下小城故事，成為永恆美麗的淳樸原鄉。

The idea of the JJ-W Hotel germinated from a deep love for the local history and a wish to refresh it with contemporary thoughts.

With Tainan people’s sincerity and etiquette, the JJ-W Hotel would love to tell you various fabulous old stories about Tainan and Taiwan, being your tour guide in the time-space context of Tainan’s historical heritage. You will be reading a pleasant travel map of true Tainan’s life and participating in various cultural events, in person or on the JJ-W Hotel’s website. The Story of the JJ-W Hotel

The JJ-W Hotel is a new life of the old Jia Jia Hotel near the historic West Market in Tainan, thus its name, which stands for both the new and the old Jia Jia, representing a close relationship between each other.
The old Jia Jia Hotel was constructed in the 1970s, designed by the very first licensed female architect, Hsiu-Lian Wang. It can be considered a meaningful emblem of Taiwan’s progress toward a multi-cultural society that shows equal respect to different genders. Unfortunately, this meaningful emblem could not survive the cruel market competition, the old Jia Jia’s reputation and business fading.

This is where the JJ-W team comes from, determined to rejuvenate the old Jia Jia Hotel and retell all its stories.
Let’s mention here one less-known yet very beautiful story, related to the enormously popular Taiwanese movie, ‘The Story of a Small Town’, 1979. The movie’s theme song of the same name was sung by Teresa Teng, the most famous singer ever in the Chinese world, whose sweet voice has been beloved even after she passed away 15 years ago. ‘Some people chat; some talk,’ sang Teng, ‘about the truly fascinating story of the small town. Please invite your friends with you, to be the guests of the small town.’ “The story” in the lyrics is the love story of the ex-convict Wen Hsiung (Kenny Bee) and the mute girl Ah Hsiu (Joan Lin), taking place in a small town.

The small town actually refers to Sanyi, Miaoli, rather than any small town in Tainan. However, in order to distribute “the story”, the film team came to the old Jia Jia Hotel while shooting ‘The Story of a Small Town’, leaving pictures of its stars and staff members. This episode, although appearing trivial, witnessed the huge popularity of the old Jia Jia and its inclination to tell stories.

The JJ-W Hotel inherits the old Jia Jia’s inclination to be a story-teller, loving to tell stories about the old Jia Jia and the old Tainan. Tainan is the ancient capital of Taiwan and one of its oldest cities, enjoying a reputation for its many well-preserved historical sites and rich cultural heritages.
